Film Review

A Separation.

I recently watched this film and enjoyed it thoroughly for multiple reasons. I first found out it was based in my home country Iran and that attracted me into watching it, due to the fact not a lot of American/Iranian based films are made and if they are they're usually nothing too good, whereas this film won an oscar in 2012! What mainly grabbed my attention was the very intense storyline.Usually i would go for a teenage comedy film so this was a very different style for me and I had a very emotional response to it. It helps gain a lot of knowledge of the Iranian culture, but it also helps let the audience understand about the difficult things we have to go through in life. I would recommend this to families with older teen children, or for people that are interested in finding more knowledge about cultures.
Personal Rating: 9/10

Task9

Representation In films~

Representation in films from mona sasani

 Learning Comment:
This task taught me a lot about how the important characters in films are shown and how they are introduced. It was very interesting as I learnt that the smaller characters are not even shown until later on in the film but the main characters are instantley shown for example in Slumdog Millionaire the first thing we see is a close up of the protagonists face. Also, costumes and the way people are dressed can reflect strongly on how you would feel towards that character, if they are wearing very formal clothing instantley you'd notice that they are of an upper class.

Using a green screen

Re-Making a film opening scene

Mean Girls from Charlotte Bancroft on Vimeo.

For our opening sequence we picked the mean girls one as it is a very relatable topic/film and seemed super fun to film, and we were correct! Throughout the whole re make of the filming we enjoyed every part of it.
What went well:
Firstly, the quality of the camera we used to video this was amazing! It makes it look extremely professional making it as good as the original opening sequence. Secondly, we decided to give the green screen an attempt and see how we would cope using it with no experience with it whatsoever, and it turned out great! Despite the fact the backgrounds of South Africa are not spot on compared to the original, it was inevitable for us to use the green screen as we would not have been able to go too South Africa and back for the day! :) However, the editing for the green screen is neatly done and it shows the scenery we needed. Thirdly, we used the exact same sound track as the original film. The music is perfectly synced with the shots and also the voice over goes very smoothly and is clear and we can understand what is being said.
What we can improve:
After re watching and comparing the original opening sequence to our re make version we realised a scene was missing from our replica. There was originally a shot of a house but unfortunately we missed that out and did not realise till later on. Also, the sound does not flow very well as the background sound reduces or increases in volume due to different areas of filming with it being outside with the wind or in a quiet area. Next time we would need to use iMovie to edit and change all the background sound to the same volume.
Learning Comment:
Throughout this task of re making an opening sequence for Mean Girls I learnt a lot of different things. The first being the major one that being anywhere and with any camera it picks up the smallest sounds making it seem quite unprofessional and rushed, our teacher pointed this out to us and we compared it to the original and realised that professional film makers do have to edit the background noises a lot. So for our final piece we would have to learn how to do this so it does not distract the audience and make it seem unprofessional. Also, I learnt how to use a green screen and how to edit the photos on it, personally I found this part super amusing! How one moment we can be in Africa then the next in space! We got super creative with a few.

20 Shots task

20 Shot Task from Charlotte Bancroft on Vimeo.

What went well:
During this task, me and my group had so much fun! We came across the conversation quite spontaneously and we managed to make it flow quite smoothly, making the conversation very casual and cool. We used a range of shot reverse shot, 180 degree rule and certain scenes were cut very nicely.
What we can improve:
Due to the fact this was filmed outside, the noise of the wind is slightly distracting. Next time we could use IMovies to edit that noise out and replace it with some background music that will match the film.
Learning Commennt:
This was super funny to film, but at the same time I learnt how very small 3 second clips added together can actually make a storyline! We needed a lot of patience with this and we were happy with the end result.

Task 10- Analaysis on a previous students work

 learning comment:
This task was lots of fun as me and my friend Imy combined our work and helped each other. I noticed in these two particular opening sequences that they are both so unique and very eye catching compared to the other and it makes them stand out. The one about the girl being  a rebellious teenager is very nicely done and even though it is simple it adds a personal feeling towards the young teen audience. And blur being a very unique story line from what we see with it being about a blind boy. In my opening sequence I would love to have these particular touches to it, being unique but also simple. I also learnt how to use a website called Emaze to set out my research.
