Coming of age target audience would be specifically towards teenagers (13-18) with a sub-urban background. I personally think this because in the majority of these films, teenagers have been used to act in them so that the audience viewing the film can relate to them on a personal level. For example The Breakfast club has teenagers acting in it, even though it is an old film we are still able to relate with them. Also, they show lives of normal teenagers, this can yet again allow the audience to relate without having to put themselves in the actor/actresses shoes.
Slumdog Millionaire
A cultural and romance film.
A Mumbai teen reflects on his upbringing in the slums when he is accused of cheating on the Indian Version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?"
Gender:
Personally, after watching this film I think it is based on males due to the fact the protagonist is a male and the audience can therefore relate with him on certain perspectives but also towards men and women that both feel underdog and feel as though they are not achieving much in life, this can therefore motivate them that simple people in the world can do big things too.
Age:
The protagonist in Slumdog Millionaire is an older teenage boy around the age of 19. So therefore the target age audience would be 15+ so that they can understand the story line and be able to relate to it somehow even if it is a very dramatic storyline. The age rating shown from IMDB is R.Social Class
This film is based in India in the very poor areas of Mumbai. This film shows very ordinary people and involves poverty and very low class families. This could be targeted to the audience of people that are of a lower class or even higher class that would like to learn about different areas of the world and how some places are suffering a lot. But also how they are getting treated.
Overall
Personally, this is one of my favourite films due to the fact the audience gets an insight on culture, romance and also poverty and how this impacted on the ordinary families of Mumbai. I think it is all together aimed at elder teens that are wanting to learn about different cultures and how they are treated.
Matilda
Story of a wonderful little girl, who happens to be a genius, and her wonderful teacher vs. the worst parents ever and the worst school principal imaginable.
Gender:
This film's protagonist is a female called Matilda. I would say the gender this is targeted at is not very specific but just male and female. I think this because the film involves both genders and also does not specifically have anything for just females (e.g on a stereotypical point of view a film about hair, makeup, beauty, dresses etc) and it does not have anything specific for males (e.g on a stereotypical point of view a film about sports or perhaps about computer games)
Age:
This films target age group is for mainly the younger ages, 9+. I think this because the younger teens wil be able to get an insight on what life is going to be like in school for example when it shows the Protagonist in class struggling to spell out a word. But also the younger ages will be able to relate on a personal level, as they are going to be going through a lot of changes in their lives just as the protagonist is shown she learns about her love for reading. IMDB has given this age rating as PG and i agree with it strongly. The age audience will need to be able to understand the storlyine along with be able to relate to it.
Social Class
This film is aimed to possibly a middle to higher class audience. The protagonist is shown to live in a very large house but also goes to a very posh looking school, even though it is old and broken down it still looks very big.
Overall
This film is very fun to watch for the younger side of teens and also for families. Gives an insight on an ordinary girls life, which a lot of other younger girls may be able to relate too.
Mean Girls
Cady Heron is a hit with The Plastics, the A-list girl clique at her new school, until she makes the mistake of falling for Aaron Samuels, the ex-boyfriend of alpha Plastic Regina George.
Gender:
This film is deffinatley aimed towards the female audience. This is because the protagonist is a female and also because there comes a lot of drama with her life, she begins to fall in love with a boy and she ends up in the wrong crowd of girls.
Age:
Mean Girls would be aimed to the mid teens around 13 to 17. In these ages they can relate to the protagonist but also be able to laugh along the storyline. Whereas if it was a middle aged female or a very young female child, they would not be able to relate to it on a personal level and therefore not enjoy it as much.
Social Class
This can be aimed at the middle class audience, because there is no extreme amounts of class shown within this film. We get an insight that the protagonist and her frineds are still too young to work and that their families still provide for them, this shows their families are of a working class and are still able to give to their children. But there is also certain scenes towards the higher class as the protagonists friend Regina's house is shown and the way her mother treats her, it is a lot different to the working class characters.
Overall
This film is very funny and also with a touch of romance, it is perfect for the teenage girls audience to watch as they will be able to relate and laugh along with this.
Learning Comment:
In this task I learnt that films have different target audiences that are very important on how they portray their film without it being offensive or boring for their audience. I emjoyed seeing Slumdog Millionaires style on how they used culture to indicate how different people live. I would like to use this to show my different background and to raise awareness on ordinary peoples lives in different countries.
